The Gaps and Questions Surrounding ‘What Remains of Edith Finch’ (WARNING: Minor Spoilers)

A few years ago I watched my boyfriend play ‘Everybody’s Gone to The Rapture’ and I was entranced. I was hooked on the mystery, the environment and how excellent the storytelling was. So when I heard about ‘What Remains of Edith Finch’ being on the Epic Games launcher for free and being similar to Rapture I had it downloaded before you could say
antidisestablishmentarianism. I decided to stream it on Tuesday this week.

I hadn’t even loaded the game up pre-stream so it was a complete blind play-through for me.

Graphically, the game is dreamlike. It’s not your state of the art, crisp as a newly ironed work shirt, God of War sort of deal. But the slightly glowy, blurred edges make for a dreamlike visual that fits with the game’s theme.

The intro was a bit vague. You start off playing as Edith. She tells you about the family home that she has just inherited. She says she hasn’t been back since her brother’s funeral. All a bit mysterious since she doesn’t explain what happened to her brother but continues to talk about her ancestors who lived in the house who each had a story behind their lives before they were all hit by a “curse”.

Molly’s room had a fair few pets. And a sickening amount of frills.

Once you get to the house you get to have a bit of a walk around. The house is dis-symmetry gone completely awry, with castles and boats built on top of an ordinary looking house. It smacks of the Winchester Mystery House if it went to Vegas, got shitfaced and came back high on LSD.

Edith’s mum didn’t think it was helpful in any way to give Edith a key to the front door of her own house, so we end up climbing through the dog flap into the garage to get into the house that way.

We move through the clutter-ridden house, trying doors all over, only to find them locked tight. By peering in through the spyglasses, we see a perfectly preserved room from a period in the family history for that particular family member. Edith tells us that after her siblings died and went missing that her mother locked all the rooms shut. She grew up looking at the rooms through the spyglass and just assumed that was normal practice in a house.

It was a bit weird that all the rooms were kept as they were, especially since there were so many of them. I get the impression that Edith’s family were incredibly eccentric, but this quirkiness really added to the mystery of the story.

Edith manages to get into one room and discovers that her ancestor who built the house loved to put secret passageways in it. She begins in Molly’s room. The game takes you through each family member’s story as if you are reliving their last moments. It doesn’t end well for any of them, I’m not going to lie and this does eventually take its toll on you and I noticed that I’d stopped talking and became pretty sad during stream. Especially when you get to Gregory’s story – you’ll understand when you play.

Whilst there is a theme with the unfortunate endings of the family and the game is mostly one long walkabout, the stories themselves are all a little series of different mini-games – from flying about as an owl and catching rabbits, to trying to navigate through an imaginary town with one hand, whilst chopping fish heads with the other. I felt as though without this variation in the mini-games, which were SO very different, I probably would have struggled to finish it before becoming bored.

Barbara’s story walked you through a moving comic book.

I did a lot of fannying about if I’m honest and still managed to complete the game in two hours. I’d say a speed playthrough could quite easily be done in a hour, which is fine if you managed to snap up the game for free like I did, but would be really gutting if you had paid the £15.99 standard price.

The game also ended quite abruptly and left us watching the credits in the hope that we were told a little more as the story left both myself and my viewers with a fair few questions. Most of these revolved around the disappearance of Edith’s brother, which personally, was my main focus in the game. We never found out what happened to Milton Finch and I had to Google an answer by the developers to find out. Whilst the answer was really clever, I got nothing from the game and had I not Googled it, I’d have been pretty put out about not finding out anything more.

Positives: Great storytelling with the mini-games and art-styles

Negatives: Very short game with unanswered questions

Overall Score: 7/10

The Chronicles of Kate_Sith and Novadoam: The Giant Teapot and Pyromaniacs

Journal Entry #4 (10/12/2125)

Turns out it really does make tea.  But not like, big cups or anything.  Just regular ones.

Wow!  Today we went to visit the World’s Largest Teapot.  I read about it in a magazine once, it was an old one, from well before the Vault was in operation.  A tourist-y one, you know the sort.  About giant balls of yarn, the world’s biggest Swiss cheese and the world’s tallest stripper pole.  That sort of thing.  Well, maybe not the last one.  If there was one, I’d have found it 😉

Anyway.  We saw the picture on our map and just had to go.  I was a bit disappointed because I kind of was hoping to get a nice hot cuppa.  I did come out with a novelty teapot though.  That actually didn’t even remotely resemble the giant one.  Again, another disappointment.  We were set upon by dogs and radroaches too.  “Protecting the giant teapot”.  As if it was much use anymore.  We did get it working actually and we got a few cups to take away.  Mine went cold though.  And Nova spilled one of his.

Venturing westward, a bar caught my eye (of course).  It was called ‘The Rusty Pick’ and apparently used to be a cool place for miners to go hang out.  Sadly, the only miners that were hanging out there anymore were Nova (get it, “minor”, cos he’s a youngun, ha ha, I kill me) and these weird oversized mole things with tentacles coming out of their faces.  Creepy as fuck.  Seriously.  I felt like we were being chased by a fat, old, hairy, Predator (you know, from those ollllllld movies with Arnold Schwarzenegger in).  It even had a gauntlet, just like Predator.  But it wasn’t as quick.  And I fired a load into its fucking creepy-ass head.

Actually, we found a secret entrance in the bar that led down to what I can only describe as the would-be Gates of Hell.  We played ‘The Floor is Lava’.  Because it really was.  We didn’t find much except a bunch of dead firefighters and a butt-load of Scorched (also creepy-ass mofos).  I thought Novadoam would have really enjoyed being down there because if there’s one thing I’ve learned about him, it’s that he’s an utter pyromaniac.  He refuses to leave a single car standing and insists on blowing every single one to smithereens.  Whether or not I am standing close by.  The amount of Stimpaks I’ve gone through is unreal.  But it keeps him happy.  And I’ve a responsibility to the guy, ever since his parents dumped him on my doorstep.  Or rather the Vault’s doorstep.  God only knows where he’s from or what his backstory is.  I don’t ask.  I just know that blowing things up makes him happy and that’s enough for me.

Look at my little pyro go.  Bless him.
One of the things we saw whilst down in the secret mine.  Unpleasant, to say the least.

The Chronicles of Kate_Sith and Novadoam: Facing off with a Deathclaw

Journal Entry #2 (06/12/2102)

Scary stuff happened today!  We were checking the map of Appalachia and saw a big fish in one of the rivers on the western side of the map.  I thought maybe it was some sort of legendary creature and suggested we had a look. Nova wasn’t wearing his power armour today (I think he’s trying to preserve fusion cores for when we really need the protection).

We were chatting as we made our way towards the little island and everything looked fairly peaceful until our HUDs informed us that we had landed on ‘Deathclaw Island’.  Both of us went instantly silent and I could tell Nova was just as scared as I was. We hadn’t encountered any Deathclaws since leaving the vault, but we had found some old journals and having read them, decided that a Deathclaw was definitely not something we wanted to bump into, on a dark night or otherwise.

Tentatively we walked forward and the tiny little island seemed deserted.  We found several skeletons who it appeared had died whilst having a picnic.  Whether this was the result of a Deathclaw, the bombs, bad pickle sandwiches or utter boredom, we weren’t sure.  Novadoam had left his carbon dating kit back at the vault and it was too late to go back there now that the air supply had been shut off.  We breathed a sigh of relief and were just about to comment on what a lovely picnic area it once must have been when the ground started shaking violently and we looked up over the small hill to see the Deathclaw himself thundering over the hill towards us.  Well, I confess, I soiled myself. We both screamed (Nova’s scream is a lot girlier than mine and I would have laughed if it were any other non life-or-death scenario) and I ran in the opposite direction. Nova wasn’t far behind me and I had already swam through the irradiated water to the other side of the river before I heard him say, “I think I can take him”.  My heart dropped and I looked over the island to see my little Nova and the Deathclaw facing off. He raised his gun and dropped some shots point blank in its face. It swiped back, tearing into my little brother and I could see the damage was obvious. Nova used a nearby rock for defense and ran around it in almost helpless circles, being chased by the beast, all the while shooting it.  I started shooting from the bank but the range on my hunting rifle wasn’t the best and I’m not sure I even did any damage. After a while, with a cry of victory, Novadoam stood proudly over the vanquished Deathclaw. My hero!

He scared the shit out me.  Genuinely.  I sharted.

The Chronicles of Kate_Sith and Novadoam: Adventures in the Wasteland

[Having recently made our way out of Vault 76, myself and darling Novadoam have been exploring the vast wastelands of Appalachia.  I have decided to chronicle our adventures here on this blog, along with postcard pictures of cool locations we visited. I shall be entitling this – The Chronicles of Kate_Sith and Novadoam. So sue me for originality.]

This is me.  Kate_Sith.  Like the Final Fantasy cat.  Not the Sith Lord.

Journal Entry #1 (03/12/2102)

Today Nova and I came across an old waterpark called Wavy Willards.  I used to love visiting waterparks when I was little. I felt kind of sad that this one, which was once so full of life and love and laughter, was now so empty and void and still.  It was overrun by ghouls and Scorched (of course) but we cleared them out – not that they won’t be back before long. We would have tested out the awesome waterslides, but the water dried up many years ago and when I tried to slide down one, the rubbery material of the butt of my vaultsuit just made me stick to the plastic.  Nova was wearing his power armour which was far too heavy to attempt any slides with. The ghouls didn’t come back while we were there – I think it was because Nova looked so scary in his armour. He’s not really scary though, he’s a big softie. And also a crack shot. He’s a one shot kill, headshot kind of guy and I’m glad he’s by my side keeping my ass safe from monsters whilst I’m rooting for junk to upgrade our C.A.M.P.

It’s a good thing there was no water or Novadoam would have sank.

Greetings

Well hello there. You seem to have stumbled upon my humble lil blog post so let me tell you about myself. My name is remotelypeachy aka Peachy aka Keeley and I am a university student, currently studying BA HONs in Fine Art. A few fun facts about myself include my love of horse riding, scented candles and peach flavoured ice tea. I’m a born and bred essex gal, I dress like the 80’s and 70s vomited all over me and I bloody love curry.

I am currently a streamer, of the art kind, fairly new to the scene I suppose. I found Twitch at the beginning of this year, my first streamer being Muyskerm (Bob), friend of jacksepticeye and Markiplier and became quickly addicted to his play-throughs of PUBG. This was the first community I became a part of, I made friends with people from across the world and we all had this admiration of Bob and his friends in common. But it didn’t feel like a family and I lost touch with those I originally felt close to. I don’t regret those friendships because they got me to where I am today.

I wanted to do things for myself and I started watching smaller, more independent streamers and I did things slow. I never once considered being a streamer before hand but after a shit few years I just wanted to do something different and something I would actually enjoy. I met my best friend Chris aka TallGuyGaming, in the utterly worst circumstances but I now can’t imagine my life without him. For some reason he insists on listening to my rambles and awful singing of Bohemian Rhapsody. Cat, Shannon, Tyler, Mariss, Bill, Shay, Jan, Kate. Wonderful, marvellous people who have no idea how much I love them. This was all through this weird dude Mr Dart, who I admit, made me laugh out loud to the point of hysterics when I’d leave his stream on in my bedroom (that’s how I’ve got 300+ hours babes). I didn’t even like State of Decay, there was just something about him that me think, yep. He’s my dad. All jokes aside, Mike has also topped up the chart to best friend.

Its weird to think that this year has been the best and the worst year of my ‘young’ life so far. I don’t think I have ever believed more in the saying “every cloud has a silver lining”. I really wouldn’t be where I am today without my friends. My family. They have just kept pushing me and supporting me to be the best version of me that I can possibly be and I will just have to continually thank them with love and hugs til the day I go up to that big ol dude in the sky.

This was a disgustingly sappy first blog post of mine, I promise you wont throw up when reading my next one.

Streamer Spotlight – MrDartsBroadcast

This week’s spotlight focuses on a relatively new streamer, who has amassed a butt-load of followers in only 5 months and plays a variety of games, including State of Decay 2, Forza Horizon 4, Call of Duty and Dead by Daylight.

MrDartsBroadcast, a.k.a The Gentleman Gamer, who minds his p’s and q’s, says please, thank you, never swears and keeps innuendo to a minimum is a really great streamer who constantly interacts with chat and makes everyone feel at home.  MrDart is very much a father figure to his community, taking everyone under his wing.  He further expands this love by adding “I’ll be your Dad” to his sub perks (sign me up!).  His streams are always interesting to watch because of the variety of games he plays.  MrDart is a big fan of State of Decay 2 (the developers love him too) and has some mad skills at the game, constantly taking part in new challenges.  He also plays Forza Horizon 4, taking us around the beautiful scenery of that game, as well as playing the odd round of Fortnite with two of the much-loved, younger members of his community, who are also dear friends to me, duo TallGuy and RemotelyPeachy.  These three people really bounce off each other and are really entertaining to watch when multiplaying.

We are often treated to a Red Room session in which MrDart cracks open a G&T, lays down his gentleman mask and has a good sesh whilst playing Dead by Daylight.  The rules are forgotten when these evenings occur we find that swearing and NSFW doesn’t result in a disapproving look from the man himself, who is too busy kicking ass in the game.

This guy is definitely one to watch, really puts the focus in, especially since he also has a real-life job too so deserves every follow he gets.

Streamer Spotlight – godsendss and 50cal_gal

Started streaming – March 2018 and July 2018
gods Plays – Hunt, Darwin Project, Overwatch
50 Plays – WoW, Fortnight, DBD, Hunt
gods’ Style – Dry, rage gamer, likes duos
50 Style – Funny, down to earth, gets scared easily
gods
This week’s streamer spotlight falls on not one, but two of my best friends, godsendss and 50cal_gal. G is a self described “scaffolder by day, streamer by night” and began streaming at the same time as myself, around March this year. Gods primarily plays Hunt: Showdown and particularly likes his duos with epic streamer PartisanTurbine64. Gods is very dry, you might also say King of the Trolls, so you may find that his chat also enjoy trolling him by hanging out in PT64’s chat and bribing him with bits to kill Gods, his duo partner. Gods also played a lot of Darwin Project and Overwatch before Hunt took over his life. Watching him play Hunt in duos with PT64 is definitely not to be missed as the craic and dry humour is immense and always gets a laugh of everyone who stops by. He also occasionally lets his kids play Fortnite with our boi Noodle3000 so those streams are also good fun to watch.
Mrs godsendss, a.k.a 50cal_gal started streaming initially due to one of gods’ pranks-gone-wrong. Gods thought it would be really funny to let his wife play some Fortnite on one of his streams. At that point, 50 had never played a game in her life, let alone streamed so everything was totally new to her. Gods thought he might show her up and get a laugh out of everyone but it turned out that 50’s personality and general conversation got him more views than his own personal streams, gave 50 a new love for gaming and streaming and lost him his PC when she demanded he share it with her when she decided to start streaming too.
50cal_gal is a really down to Earth streamer who likes to play World of Warcraft, Dead by Daylight and recently, Hunt: Showdown. 50 gets scared pretty easily and has a tendency to scream (like a girl, but we’ll allow that since she is one) when playing DBD but this only makes for a really entertaining stream. You also wouldn’t wanna mess with 50 as she’s hardcore and practises MMA. We all know who wears the trousers in this relationship 😉
50cal
These guys are absolutely brilliant, always a joy to hang out with and definitely worth a follow.
